Alice moved to Newport, NC from the inland Northwest. About 13 years ago she was introduced to the art of Intarsia. Starting with mostly cedar and pine for her designs, she has expanded her pallet to using all types of hardwoods. With the variation of color and grain, no two ever turn out the same no matter how many of the same pieces she makes. "The natural wood is so beautiful I don't use any paint or stain, only a clear varnish to let the amazing colors show".

Intarsia: a woodworking technique that uses varied shapes, sizes, and species of wood  fitted together to create a mosiac-like picture with an illusion of depth. Intarsia is created through the selection of different types of wood, using their natural grain pattern and color to create variations in the pattern. After selecting the specific woods to be used within the pattern, each piece is then individually cut, shaped and finished. Once the individual pieces are complete, they are fitted together like a jig-saw puzzle.
